Basically mapmakers would make up towns as a copyright trap. If they saw these fake towns on other maps they could sue for copyright infringement. Although some weird things have come from this practice such as real cities being made and the conspiracy of Bielefeld Gemany which many people don’t believe exists despite there being over 300,000 citizens.
