An interesting theory by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. Too intricate to do it justice here. The overall idea is that reality has been superceded by representation. Specifically representation of representation, not even representation of reality. Baud called these simulacra, as in simulation of simulation. However he never wrote on mkultra or addressed it in his writing.
