Prior to the “heroic age” of British geology there were multiple theories which explained Earths place in the cosmos with reference to new findings of stratiagraphy and Biblical historical interpretations. The idea that earth was comet was touted by one scientist (I forget who but it may have been Comte. Buffon) though it was never taken very seriously.
