During the Moscow theater hostage crisis in 2002, Russian forces used a mysterious chemical agent to subdue the Chechen militants holding hostages. Officially, the substance used was an aerosolized form of fentanyl. However, conspiracy theories suggest that the actual agent was a secret, experimental chemical weapon, and that its use was a test for future operations. The high number of fatalities among the hostages adds to the suspicion that the full truth has not been disclosed.
